Subtle dye lot variations are a natural & acceptable part of the curtain craftsmanship.
Why there are Color Variations
Dye lot variations refer to the subtle color differences that can occur between different production batches of the same curtain style. A dye lot is a group of textiles or fibers that are dyed together in the same batch or vat.
Since no two batches of fabric are exactly identical, even runs that are produced one after the other can have small variations in color. This is similar to how yarn can behave: if the fibers come from different sources or are processed differently, it can result in slight changes in color—even when the same dyeing process is used.
Why Do Dye Lot Variations Happen?
Several factors can influence the outcome of dye lots, leading to slight color differences. Some of these factors include:
- Heat levels
- Water purity
- Dye formula
- Duration of the dyeing process
- Color formula
- Number of colorants added to dye bath
- Duration (or timing)
- Pigment balance
- Air pressure
- Fabric movement
- Chemical composition
- Fiber molecular structure
- Chemical makeup
- Molecular arrangement of fibers
What You Can Do to Minimize Dye Lot Variations
To ensure a consistent look for your curtains, we recommend ordering all your curtains in a single order. For example, if you’re ordering curtains for multiple windows, make sure to place them in one order to avoid any color differences between them. By doing this, we can minimize the risk of noticeable color variations and ensure your curtains look as expected in your space.
After receiving your curtains, be mindful of the lighting conditions when checking the color. The same fabric can look different under various light sources, so it’s crucial to use daylight near noon for an accurate color match.
What We Do to Minimize Dye Lot Variation
We take careful steps throughout the entire production process to minimize dye lot variations. To maintain a consistent color across all your drapery, we ensure that the yarn used comes from the same dye lot whenever possible.
We also make it a priority to use fabric from the same batch for each order, so you’ll receive a set of curtains with as little color variation as possible. Additionally, we closely match the fabric color to the reference color card to ensure the final product closely aligns with the original fabric color and minimizes any discrepancies.
Important Notice
Buying curtains in separate orders or at different times may result in dye lot variations. Even curtains purchased together may show slight color differences over time due to various factors.
